You find a pamphlet on Carriers pinned to a pole. You read the front of it.
A GUIDE TO CARRIERS – CREATED BY THE AUTHORITY FOR THE PROTECTION OF THE CITIZENS OF THE GATE
As you may have seen there is a new type of zombie amongst us. A zombie that wears the face of a human, fakes the feelings of one, and can kill you with inhuman agility and strength.
They can give you the disease, beware them or be infected at your own risk!
Protect your loved ones and stay away from the Quarantine Zone!---------------------------------------
On the flip side of the pamphlet is a hand scrawled note with far more information.
Carriers are humans that were changed by the disease that has turned nearly our entire race into mindless eating machines, but they did not become 'zombies'. They were changed into something that was not alive, but at the same time not dead. They cannot pass along the disease through touch or sex or even through contact with blood, they rendered the mutation inert. They can think and feel the same as everyone else. Sometimes during the change they forget certain emotions.
Physically the only changes are a lowered body temperature, paler skin, and red irises that darken with hunger. They no longer require human food but have acquired the need for human flesh and blood. They are faster, stronger, have an acute sense of smell and eyesight better suited to night hunting, they can even regenerate missing limbs and organs. They are dangerous, yes, but they choose to live alongside us and what do we do? We put them in the Arena and make them live in a ghetto!
Carriers are not what the Authority makes them out to be. They only feed us lies.---------------------------------------
A few days after finding the note you meet a bartender named Jackal and you ask her what she knows about Carriers.
"Alright, well Carriers are one of the two main species around here. They are as common as humans are now of days, but most humans don't really interact with them that much. Carriers, you see, have been mutated by the disease -- we're gonna call it H1Z1, heh get it? Like swine flu? Oh never mind -- the disease has pretty much turned the entire human race into mindless eating machines. Of course Carriers are far more dangerous because they can think like humans. They aren't zombies. They aren't dead.
"So let's start from the very beginning hmm?
"The disease started as a fluke, one person just happened to wake up after being bitten by a Walker and was still able to think. That person's heart never stopped beating. And that is the key point here; the heart never stopped beating which kept a constant supply of oxygen going to the brain. The fever that does all this burns though a person that will become a Carrier for roughly a week, give or take. After that newly transformed Carrier has to eat. Large quantities of fresh, raw, preferably human meat should be given to them or they might attack the nearest person. Once more this is a mental thing. I'll give you an example, say a man who grew up fighting, was probably a gangster, maybe did a few stints in jail is turned into a Carrier, nine times out of ten that guy is going to lunge at the nearest person. If there are any people nearby. Most of the people that had gone through the change where alone and struggling to survive, or had just given up and where waiting for the disease to take them. Those people are going to fall back on their instincts.
"Which leads us to what has been affected. Of course appearance has changed. The irises of a Carrier are crimson now, the skin has a deathly paleness to it, and the upper and lower canines have elongated. Like, more vicious, can walk in the daylight, vampires -- minus all the glitter bull shit. Carriers get more than just superficial changes, the get real, physical changes. Here's the full list- we'll go into detail one by one in a moment so just chillax.
• Stronger
• Faster
• Enhanced vision for low levels of light/clarity
• Enhanced sense of smell
• Enhanced hearing
• Regeneration
"Strength and speed are a give in, they are made to hunt, just like the Walkers. Sight, smell, and hearing fall in line with hunting, you need those for night hunting, well, animals do, and I guess if you really wanted to hunt without night vision goggles on you'd need them as well. The regeneration is the strangest change. It's almost like the H1Z1 virus doesn't ever want for them to die...
"Anyways, some Carriers forget things, small things, sometimes they forget emotions. The emotions aren't forgotten, but they are in a sort of dormant state. They can reappear if they are triggered, but humans don't really interact with them. Too scared to be 'bitten'. They hate to hunt live prey, because yes, screaming humans can really be a damper on your appetite. They aren't dead and they feel empathy just like all of the sane people left alive." The bartender sighs and puts a hand under her chin "That's all I can really think of about the Carriers... oh wait, they aren't invincible. You have to remove the head, not just bash out their brains like you would a Walker. The brainstem is the only thing that can't repair itself." She nods to herself and you thank her for all the information, then you leave the bar.---------------------------------------
Most people don't know that the Carriers were created by the pre-Authority Tel Lonean race. The were created in an attempt to make humans into a fierce, strong, nearly immortal soldier that the Tel Loneans could use. The first Carriers were dubbed 'Carrier Elites'. These rare few were the genetically 'pure'. The Carriers that came along randomly when the disease morphed into something far more deadly were hated. All of them were hated. All because they saw them as the end of their world as they knew it.
The Tel Loneans that survived evacuated on seventeen huge spaceships called 'The Fleet' and escaped their destroyed planet. Unfortunately the disease came with them. When they reached Earth once more all hell broke loose. The humans suffered the same fate to their world as the Tel Loneans did. So in an effort to help the humans reconstruct and settle their guilty hearts they used their advanced technology to construct the gate. The Carrier Elites were systematically hunted down and destroy for the most part to hide what the Authority was and their hand in what happened to Earth and the human population.
